Joana Nicolau, widely known as Joaninha, will be back on Boavista for the coordination of our community stay on Fundo das Figueiras, to continue the great job she did during the 2011 season.
In the text below, she tells us about her personal motivations and impressions on the community of the North of Boavista.
"When I think about Cape Verde, I think about beach, sun, sand, but I also think about culture and tradition. To be part of it, even if only for a few months, as the coordinator of the project site in Fundo das Figueiras, I can say, is something very special. In this unique place, where we can get close to the community, we can understand much better their culture, their traditions, the day-to-day life of simple people who have so much to teach!
It is a magical place, a small village, where the traditional houses give colour to the streets; it is a place where we can take a rest by the door and hear the music of the guitars, playing the traditional morna at the next corner, or hear the children laughing while running and playing at the streets with all the energy that is part of them; we can go for a walk around the calm village and see people entertaining themselves playing Ouril, traditional Capeverdean game, or we can leave Fundo das Figueiras behind and discover incredible places, like the beaches of Norte and Canto, or Porto das Gatas - a fishermen spot where we can have a chat before they go out to sea; we climb mountains and find ourselves astonished by the amazing views, we can walk through Boavista's landscapes and discover places like Ojo de Mar, an oasis lost in the middle of an arid scenario, which can be reached only after crossing mountains and valleys by foot... the arrival is stunning, after so much walking under an extreme heat, we can cool down and just stand there admiring the hidden secrets Boavista has to offer! " Joana Nicolau, Coordinator of the project site in Fundo das Figueiras.
